After selecting her new novel Finding Juniper to be 1 of our 3 February ’25 Reading Is a Lifestyle Christian Subscription Book Picks, we asked author Cindy Thomson to share some insight with us about what went into writing her book. Cindy published her first novel in 2006 and has been writing ever since and we encourage you to stick around as we go beyond the page with her.
What makes Finding Juniper different from your previous books?
Of all genres that you could’ve written, why’d you choose Historical Fiction?
Hearing about how soldiers returning to Ireland after WWI were treated made me want to explore how someone might have coped. It was a tough time for them but it was also a tough time to be an Irish immigrant in America with no connections. Prohibition offered easy money, so it was easy to imagine how someone like Paddy Doyle might have been drawn to work as a rumrunner. I was also interested in how a young girl left at an institution might have coped once she was released. Those two story ideas sparked the writing of Finding Juniper. And I like exploring family relationships [as well].
What part of the writing process for Finding Juniper did you enjoy the most?
I always enjoy the editing part. It’s where the story really comes together and where I can work to make the novel the best I can make it. I generally go from wanting to throw my computer through the window to this stage where I really [start] enjoying it.
Who’s your favorite character in Finding Juniper?
Are you satisfied with how things ended for your main character(s)?
How do you want people to feel after they’ve read Finding Juniper?
That there is always hope. That they too can persevere and come out the other side. People have done it [and] they can too. There are others out there waiting for you to inspire them.
