Independent Bookstore Day is Saturday, April 24th!

Hi, I’m Abby! – Owner

serendipity

I launched Shelves in June of 2019 and have been serving as Charlotte’s friendly neighborhood bookseller ever since. In addition to being a dream come true, Shelves is both an online and mobile pop-up bookstore that partners with other small businesses that have a brick & mortar presence in the Charlotte Metro area. We are committed to educating families and celebrating the joy that reading books brings to people all over the world because we believe that reading is freedom. We are on a quest to not only provide our supporters with great books; but also create amazing lifestyle products made exclusively with readers, writers, and dreamers in mind. It’s been quite a journey so far and continues to surprise me along the way. Still, I am humbled by your decision to support our store and join me in building it shelf-by-shelf. Thanks for stopping by!

Kiana – Operations Assistant

Kiana (pronounced Ky-ah-na) joined the Shelves team in January 2021. She helps manage the daily operations of our online store and provides excellent customer support. Learn more about her below.

What does reading is a lifestyle mean to you?  In 2020, I spent time growing my library and learning so much about myself through the literature I’ve read. I wake up excited to read and it’s rare that you see me without my face buried in a book. Reading is a lifestyle means the opportunity to discover myself, ask questions that allow me to grow and read books that inspire and encourage me to be a better person.

Name 3 books you read in 2020 that you loved.  The 3 books I’ve read this year and absolutely loved were They Were Her Property by Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers, Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall and Sugar by Bernice L. McFadden.

Besides reading, what’s another favorite hobby or pastime of yours?  Painting is another hobby that I have. Art allows me to be creative and challenges me to express myself in a unique way.
