This Could Be a Hallmark Movie

We selected not 1 but 2 holiday-themed novels for our Reading Is a Lifestyle Christian book subscription members for the month of December, including Jocelyn LaFavers debut Mystery novel A Christmas Killer. Check out Shelves Bookstore’s Q&A with Jocelyn about her journey to becoming a Christian fiction author.

Tell us what type of reader you believe would enjoy A Christmas Killer.

I think that any reader who loves a good cozy story, a Hallmark-style movie, or the classic Dickens tale will love A Christmas Killer! It’s meant to thrill and uplift, to entertain and to challenge, and I pray that all who read it feel the tug of the Lord on the sleeve of their hearts as they find a bit of themselves in Eve’s story.

Was there anything specific that inspired A Christmas Killer?

Last Christmas, my cousin said that he wanted to see a Hallmark movie in which the heroine solves a murder and gets her Christmas happily ever after. I knew that the classic story line of A Christmas Carol would be perfectly suited to that idea and so I began my journey. My cousin sadly passed [away] just before the book’s release and it’s dedicated to him.

Which character in A Christmas Killer is your favorite?

My favorite character in this story has to be Eve herself. I have always loved the character of Scrooge and I hope that I did a convincing job of not only comparing her to him, but also showing how [Eve] became who she is today because of her past. [Also] how redemption can only be found by allowing our Father to redeem that past.

As a Christian Novelist, what’s one goal you hope to accomplish?

I hope to bring readers closer to the Lord by entertaining them while [also] showing them how God can transform their lives. No matter what the story line is, each character [in A Christmas Killer] has their own problems and challenges that can be overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony!

Were there any Bible scriptures that you leaned on for encouragement while writing A Christmas Killer?

While there are no [specific] scriptures that I chose to encourage me [during the writing] process, I stayed in the Word. Any time I felt like I wanted to quit or put it down, scripture sustained me through it all.
